Founder Patron – Mayor of London, Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson Since taking office in 2008, the Mayor has been committed to transforming the lives of all young Londoners and increasing positive opportunities for them. Although not formally required to do so, he has chosen to make a significant new investment in music education.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) has spent over £400,000 championing music education provision in London, bringing stakeholders together and providing challenge and leadership. It has played a central role in developing the sector to the point we are at today, in which funders, policy-makers, schools, music services, arts organisations and HE institutions are working together for the first time towards an efficient, coherent and needs-based system of provision.

The Mayor welcomes the creation of The Mayor of London’s Fund for Young Musicians because he is keen to find a way of sustaining the long-term future of music education in the capital and increasing private support for those young musicians who are at the start of their musical learning and who are often overlooked by existing provision.

The GLA has put music education on the agenda, brought together partners into a shared commitment and welcomes support from funders who can build on this work.
